Alternative fruit fly bait for wine grape growers

Wine grape growers located in fruit fly red outbreak areas can register and access free Entrust to mix with sulphur sprays for grapevines to support with fruit fly eradication. Entrust is a simpler bait to apply for wine grape growers because it is able to be mixed with sprays that are already being applied to vineyards.

PIRSA will continue to treat areas 200 m around a confirmed fruit fly detection.

You will need to consider using Entrust for:

  • production wine grapes – no later than the growth stage E-L 31 where berries are peasize (not > 7mm diameter) as per export harvest intervals
  • grapes that will not be sold in 2023 vintage – Entrust should be applied at the time of veraison as this is when berries are more susceptible to fruit fly.

Guidelines will be provided when you register with advice to apply Entrust:

  • once every 4 weeks to break the fruit fly lifecycle
  • a maximum of 4 applications per season
  • as per label rate of 20 ml per 100 L for light brown apple moth on grapevines

Application should be recorded in your spray diary and when you collect bait you will need to supply a map of the area that will be sprayed.

Please note, the self-baiting program has requirements in addition to those for the movement of wine grapes for market access.

Complete a registration form or read more about the self-baiting program.
