Riverland fruit fly fight this spring

Riverland fruit fly eradication efforts are increasing from August to include more grower involvement and residents working together with PIRSA, as part of the Spring Eradication Plan.

Fruit fly officers will be out targeting residential properties in red outbreak areas, so residents will start to see more PIRSA staff requesting access to yards to install or check fruit fly traps, apply organic bait, and check fruit for fruit fly.

The traps, called Cera-traps, capture and kill fruit flies and are safe for your family and pets.

As part of the eradication plan, sterile fruit flies will also be released. These flies are specially bred to break the breeding cycle and through August, PIRSA will be releasing them from a special mechanism on the back of a ute across the highest risk areas of the Riverland.

As we head into spring, keeping your garden clean is one of the best ways you can prevent fruit fly in your garden, and increase the chance of success for baiting sterile flies.

  • Pick ripe fruit promptly.
  • Collect fallen fruit. Dispose of it safely for your area.
  • Check for signs of fruit fly.
  • Call the hotline number if you suspect anything – 1300 666 010.

Thank you for continuing to work with us to protect South Australia from fruit fly.
