Options for metro growers

The declared outbreak of Queensland fruit fly in Salisbury North affects how fruit and vegetables can be moved and sold.

If you're a grower in an outbreak (red) area or suspension (yellow) area, and you want to access sensitive markets, you need to apply an accepted treatment.

The treatment option that suits you best will depend on which market you want to access.

To check if you're in an outbreak (red) area or suspension (yellow) area, see the outbreak map.

If you're a grower in the area affected by the Salisbury North outbreak, and you want to access the metropolitan Adelaide market, you must apply one of the following PIRSA-approved procedures:

  • CA-33 (pre-harvest monitoring, bait spraying, and post-harvest inspection suitable for organic production)
  • ICA-07 (cold sterilisation)
  • ICA-04 (fumigation).

These three treatments apply to the types of fruits and vegetables that are grown in the areas affected by the Salisbury North outbreak.

There are more treatment and movement options for fruits and vegetables grown in other locations.

CA-33

If you want to transition to operational procedure CA-33, our Market Access Team can help you. This treatment option allows growers to regain access to the Adelaide metropolitan market without fumigation.

To use this operational procedure, individual growers must use baiting and on-farm management controls for a 6-week period to demonstrate freedom from Queensland fruit fly:

If you're a grower or reseller interested in learning about and establishing the CA-33 operational procedure on your property, email the PIRSA Market Access team (PIRSA.MarketAccessSalisburyAASLocal@sa.gov.au) to arrange a visit from a field staff team member.

ICA-07 Cold treatment disinfestation

This treatment is not suitable for all commodities.

ICA-04 Fumigation

This is not an accepted treatment for plums, and treats Queensland fruit fly only in mangoes.

Fumigation treatment locations

PIRSA has been working with agrochemicals supplier TriCal and the South Australian Produce Market (SAPM) since the outbreak was declared to increase fumigation capacity.

TriCal site

The TriCal site at Edinburgh has limited capacity.

SA Produce Market

TriCal now manages a site at the South Australian Produce Market (SAPM) site. If you choose to fumigate at the SAPM site, your produce needs to be stored in secure conditions until fumigation is applied. The produce must be either:

  • stored in an enclosed building (the Growers Pavilion or Wholesalers/Growers premises)
  • covered with appropriate fruit fly netting.

For either option, you must make sure that there are no gaps larger than 1.6 mm when measured diagonally. This includes holes in any enclosed building or fruit fly netting. Our Market Access team will spot check enclosed buildings and netting at storage locations.

You must book in for fumigation before your produce arrives on site. After your produce has been fumigated, SAPM unloaders can deliver the produce to a secured building in the market ready for its next destination.
